John J. Brennan
Past Chairman, Board of Trustees
As a member of the FAF Board of Trustees, Mr. Brennan chairs its Appointments and Evaluations Committee, and serves on its Executive and Standard-Setting Process Committees. From February 2009 to October 2012, Mr. Brennan served as FAF chairman, responsible for the oversight of the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) and the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB). In this role, he provided leadership to the Board of Trustees in achieving the FAF’s strategic goals. He chairs the FAF’s Appointments and Evaluations Committee, and serves on its Executive and Standard-Setting Process Oversight Committees.
Mr. Brennan joined Vanguard in July 1982. Headquartered in Malvern, Pennsylvania, Vanguard comprises more than 170 separate domestic investment portfolios, with current U.S. fund assets of more than $1.8 trillion. He was elected president in 1989, served as chief executive officer from 1996 to 2008, and chairman of the board from 1998 to 2009.
Mr. Brennan is a director of General Electric Company; a director of LPL Financial; a director of The Hanover Insurance Group, Inc.; a director of Guardian Life Insurance Company of America; a governor and lead governor of the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA); a director of the United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey; a founding trustee of the University of Notre Dame; a trustee of King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST); chairman of the Vanguard Charitable Endowment Program; and a member of the Pennsylvania Early Learning Investment Commission.
Mr. Brennan graduated from Dartmouth College and earned a master’s degree in business administration from the Harvard Business School. He has received honorary degrees from Curry College and Drexel University.
